The Speed Technologies/Bully Dog Lays Wide Open in Surprise, AZ
AMERICAN FALLS, ID (October 27, 2009) Coming into the race in AZ, the points in the Bully Dog SuperLite Championship were very tight. John Harrah of the Bully Dog/Speed Technologies team led Chad Leising by less then 10 points. While those two were focused on one another, there were a handful of other drivers looking to get into the mix. Ricky James, who won both races at the previous rounds in Lake Ellsinore, CA, wanted to repeat that performance. Chad George, a new driver in the class came out swinging and set the fastest lap in qualifying on Friday.
With the drop of the green flag on Saturday, Dawson Kirchner spun out hitting Ricky James and Brandon Bailey on the first lap causing a restart. On the restart, Joey Granatelli took an early lead followed by Bailey and George, followed closely by Harrah and in fifth Brandon Ward (son of Unlimited 2 driver Jeff Ward). On the restart Chad Leising pulled into the hot pit, he would return to the race later limping around just to capture as many points as possible. Lap two saw Granatelli and Bailey make heavy content, two laps later Grantelli was out due to damage putting Brandon Bailey into the lead in the Stronghold Motorsports truck. On lap 3 Bailey went up onto two wheels, loosing momentum allowing Chad George and Ricky James to get by. Bailey and James fought hard eventually getting passed Chad George, Ricky taking the top stop. Last time the class raced in AZ Jason Patison took a hard hit in the whoops; that wreck seemed to still be affecting the driver as he struggled through the section again all race having a number of big “offs”. On the final lap, Chad George made an attempt to take the inside of Bailey in turn five, but that caused a collision putting both drivers back to sixth and seventh places. Ricky James was able to hold on to his third victory. Second place went to Dawson Kirchner, third to Chuck Dempsey in the XDP sponsored truck, fourth to Kirchner’s Bully Dog teammate John Harrah, and fifth to Brandon Ward.
With Harrah finishing off the podium and Leising finishing last, the points race remained close.
With such an action packed race on Saturday everyone looked forward to Sunday’s race. At the drop of the green flag John Harrah jumped to the lead followed by Brandon Bailey and Chad George. On lap 1 Bailey was charging hard, overdrove into lap two and ended up going over giving the second spot to George. As the mandatory caution came out, the front group got mixed up due to mechanical issues on George’s truck and contact between the others. When the race went green again Ricky James jumped to the lead followed by Leising, Harrah, Kirchner, and Granatelli. Racing into the whoops section Ricky James biked it up onto two wheels giving The Hart and Huntington truck of Chad Leising the lead. A battle went on behind him between James, Granatelli, Harrah and Bailey who ended up barrel rolling 3 times off turn four. Leising kept the top spot at the finish followed by James and Kirchner.
With one race weekend left in the points championship the fight for the points are still very close between Chad Leising and John Harrah. Last time we were in Primm (location of the next race) the two battled hard. Who will win the inaugural Bully Dog SuperLite Championship? Find out in 3 short weeks!
