Surprise, Arizona (May 2, 2009) In front of thousands of SouthWest off road racing fans, Jerry Whelchel drove the #2 Porter/Whelchel Pro 2WD race truck to a close win over the 4WheelParts Pro 2WD of Greg Adler. Finishing in third on the podium was Super Clean sponsored, Bryce Menzies, driving the #7 Pro 2WD across the finish line.
The race started out with Mike Johnson out in front and a slew of racers chasing him down including Carl Renezeder, Rodrigo Ampudia, John Ward and others blasting around this race course. However, attrition took its toll as everyone blasted through the mogul section at full speed and it was only a matter of time before parts gave way to MOTHER DIRT.
Carl Renezeder suffered a flat tire and he fell off the pace, Mike Johnson slowed and pulled off the track and then Rodrigo Ampudia broke steering while racing through the mogul section. Ampudia continued to run slow around the race course for important points, but he was lapped several times.
With Renezeder out of the picture, Whelchel wicked up the pace and once in front he never looked back. Whelchel demo’d a classic and near perfect short course lesson all the while Greg Adler and Bryce Menzies were duking it out for the second and third positions.
Adler never let off and Menzies showed off his mentoring from World Champion, Rob MacCachren, and turned inside Adler a couple times but was unable to get around the 4WheelParts off road company founder and owner.
The three warriors stood on the podium in front of all the crowds just in front of the stands off the track and soaked up the cheers and applause from Arizona’s wild fans.
