Mongo Racing Ready to Rock at Terrible's Town 250
Parker, Arizona (April 26, 2006)
On a map, Pahrump, Nev., doesn't sit on any major earthquake fault line.
But make no mistake about it, the "big one" is coming, in the form of a ground-shaking wave of momentum Mongo Racing will be riding into the 2006 Best In The Desert Terrible's Town 250 off-road race.
The event is scheduled April 29 in the high desert surrounding Pahrump, with preliminary activities scheduled April 28, and one of the pre-race favorites is the yellow KC Hilites, Stock-Full Production Ford F-150 driven by Mongo Racing's Randy Merritt.
Merritt and Mongo Racing are headed to Pahrump on the heels of a hard-fought, well-deserved second place finish in class in the Best In The Desert racing series’ season-opening Blue Water Resort & Casino Parker 425.
The finish vaulted Mongo Racing to the No. 2 slot in the Stock-Full Production standings, the team's best start to date in the challenging BITD series.
"It was a long time coming," said Merritt, talking about the effort at Parker, "to finish strong and close to the leader." Overall, the top four trucks in class finished within nine minutes of each other.
"We've been working and making changes to find the right combination of speed and suspension," continued Merritt. "And with (class) limitations on both, it just takes time.”
A year ago at the 2005 BITD Terrible's Town 250, Merritt and navigator/technician Chris Golding, also from Parker, drove to a second place finish in class. It was the team's best finish in the then new truck.
Since then, as Merritt said, the team has been working to find just the right balance of speed and suspension, combined with durability. And it's obvious they came awfully close at Parker earlier this year.
Now, taking what they learned at Parker, combined with more knowledge gained in further testing since then, Merritt and the team are primed for the next challenge in the BITD series.
