LOS ANGELES—Nearly 250 entries
from 25 U.S. States and seven countries have already
been accepted for Saturday’s ‘live’
drawing for starting positions for November’s
39th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 desert race. The
SCORE Start Draw will be held during the two-day RACEfest
Friday and Saturday at the Lake Elsinore Hotel and Casino
in Lake Elsinore, Calif.
In addition to the ‘live’ drawing for the
granddaddy of all desert races, other activities scheduled
for the two-day RACEfest include a Freestyle Motocross
Demonstration, a SCORE Pit Crew Challenge, a Texas Hold
‘em Poker Tournament, Pool Party, the SCORE Lite
Challenge, a Silent Auction and live music. Proceeds
from the two-day RACEfest will go to the Chris Ackerman
Foundation.
In addition to appearances by several
of SCORE’s top drivers and riders and their incredible
desert-racing machines, the festivities will start on
Friday night with the No Fear energy drink Freestyle
MX show, silent auction, and live music by the 80’s
cover band ‘Flock of 80’s. Scheduled for
appearances at the Freestyle show are X Games stars
Nate Adams and Brian Deegan along with Deegan’s
entire Metal Mulisha team. The RACEfest Vendor’s
Village and silent auction open at 4 p.m. followed by
the No Fear energy drink Freestyle MX show at 5:30 p.m.,
a rider autograph session at 7 p.m., the $5,000 charity
poker tournament at 7:30 p.m. and the ‘A Flock
of 80’s’ performance at 8:30 p.m.
The entire event is being produced by
the colorful Desert Assassins race team, led by co-owners
Cameron Steele and Ed ‘Clyde’ Stout along
with Travis Clarke, who is part of the two-time SCORE
Lite point championship team of Tom Watson and Tim Noe.
Primary associate sponsors are the Lake Elsinore Casino,
Blue C Communications and SCORE International, the World’s
Foremost Desert Racing Organization.
“This is going to be a really fun
event and we are looking forward to being part of it
all,” said Sal Fish, CEO and President of SCORE,
which is celebrating its 33rd year as the world’s
foremost desert racing organization. “It will
be a super way to start the festivities of the world’s
oldest and most prestigious desert race.”
The drawing for the 27 Pro and 5 Sportsman
classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs is scheduled
to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Over 300 vehicles are
expected to leave the starting line in Ensenada on Nov.
16.
This Saturday’s activities are scheduled
to begin at 8:30 a.m. with Kettle One Bloody Mary Mixer
and Lake Elsinore Casino sponsored brunch and will continue
with a special Blue C Communications/Desert Assassins
SCORE Lite Challenge at noon where a dozen top SCORE
desert racers race individually, one lap, for times.
Scheduled to compete in the Blue C/DA/SCORE
Lite Challenge are Brian Burgess, Caleb Gaddis, Darren
Hardesty, Harley Letner, Andy McMillin, Daniel McMillin,
Adam Pfankuch, Stan Potter, David Scaroni, Matt Scaroni,
Justin Smith and Kash Vessels.
During the day-long festivities on Saturday
there will also be an afternoon SCORE Pool Party featuring
Ketel One Martini and Red Bull Ice Bar and a Margaritaville
Tequila station and during the drawing there will be
a luncheon catered for racers and their families catered
by Wahoo’s.
The unique $5,000 Yokohama SCORE Pit Crew Challenge
will start at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The field will be
limited to 12, two-person teams who will perform various
functions simulating actions that occur out in desert.
Two raffles that will also be part of
the festivities will be the SCORE Medical raffle and
the Racing for Life raffle.
The SCORE Medical raffle will start at
the RACEfest and the winner will be selected during
the official racer briefing at 7 p.m. on Wednesday,
Nov. 15 at the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. With just 600
tickets at $25 each being put on sale starting this
weekend, the prize will be a new Suzuki QuadRacer LT-450
ATV, donated by American Suzuki. Proceeds will supplement
the SCORE Medical support team equipment and personnel
for this year’s race down the Baja California,
Mexico, peninsula.
The Nitro Tire Racing For Life Off-Road
Team, competing in this year’s race, has dedicated
2006 to raising awareness and money for the Scleroderma
Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. With
several prizes to be presented Saturday, the grand prize
will be a fully restored 1974 Husqvarna 250.

This year’s legendary desert classic,
to be held Nov. 15-18 in Mexico, will start in Ensenada,
Baja California and the rugged course will run on both
sides of the majestic peninsula all the way down to
La Paz in Baja California Sur.
It’s the oldest and most well known
of all desert races, and it remains as the single most
appealing accomplishment to a driver. Since 1967, the
mother of all desert races has been run over the mysterious
Baja California peninsula.
This year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 1000
desert race will be televised on a delayed basis as
a one-hour NBC Sports special for the third consecutive
year, airing at 2:30 p.m. (EST) on Sunday, Dec. 10 on
the NBC Television Network. It will also air on a delayed
basis outside of the U.S. on ESPN International.
The 2006 SCORE Desert Series includes
chase for the $50,000 Kartek Off-Road contingency bonus
to be awarded to several qualified 2006 SCORE Class
point champions.
The 2006 SCORE Desert Series also involves
the hunt for the annual Toyota Milestone and $12,000
Toyota True Grit Awards. The prestigious Toyota Milestone
Awards are presented to every racer who completes every
required mile of every race in the 2006 SCORE Desert
Series. The $12,000 Toyota True Grit purse is split
among the SCORE season point champions who are also
Toyota Milestone award winners in several non-factory-backed
classes.
