PRIMM, Nevada (April 20, 2009) Looks like the driveshaft let go at 100+ right after the roadcrossing when heading up the hill..I know this section well as we test there all the time and it is wide open throttle..No engine/trans explosion or anything like that, Kroyer & Gearworks are some of the best in the business and I would not want any speculation about the quality of their products...they are top notch..

The shrapnel from the driveshaft must have pierced the oil coolers or oil lines as everything is right behind the seats on this truck…By the time I got it stopped I realized we were on fire as the flames were shooting up my back & my pumper filled my helmet with black smoke. I pulled the onboard system but it wasn’t enough, nor was using the outboard fire extinguisher…everything seems like slow motion when you are trying to get out of a flame filled race car…
The next vehicle was 2 or 3 minutes behind us (Loyd Sproule), and thanks to Lloyd he stopped and we grabbed his fire extinguisher…but it spread too quickly…Fiberglass burns easily and spreads fast…For all you racers out there, wear the proper safety equipment, as one day you may have to crawl out from a burning race car while it is upside down instead of on its wheels…..we were lucky..
Thanks a bunch to the BITD fire guys who quickly showed up with the right fire fighting equipment…We had just fueled at Pit 1, and 70 gallons of race fuel on board could have made it much worse. These guys jumped right in and put the fire out, with nothing on but jeans & t-shirts!
We had a good run yesterday after doing a couple of 360’s in qualifying. We went from 38th to 18th on the road in less than 100 miles..but oh well, that’s racing..we will be back… hopefully the chassis can be repaired….we have plenty of spare parts for this truck…and next time we will have more than one outboard fire extinguisher (lol)…
Thanks,
Kory
