MacCachren Holds Off Pfankuch in Season Opener at SNORE Battle At Primm 1600 Race! Josh Danzio Claims Class 1 in 2-day Desert Race
LAS VEGAS, NV — Rob MacCachren, the reigning SNORE 1600 and OVERALL Series Champion, arrived to Primm, Nevada to defend his title against a huge field of ultra competitive 1600 racers all hoping to unseat the undisputed king of 1600 racing. The first race of the 2010 SNORE Series saw over 400 racers roll through contingency and technical inspection, which lasted well past midnight on Friday evening. Hosted at the Buffalo Bill's Casino on the border of California and Nevada race fans and teams lined the race course in the huge spectator area. Inclement weather threatened to turn the barren desert into a mud bog, however the weather held off all weekend long.
The 1600 race fielded the most pro teams, however the sportmans truck race had over 80 entries in Saturday's final race of the day.
However, all eyes were on the most competitive group in the SNORE Series and that was undoubtedly the super fast 1600 cars.
On day one of the two day closed course desert race, MacCachren unleashed the ROCKSTAR Energy Racing 1600 single-seat Alumi Craft race car and claimed the top spot after beginning middle of the starting pack. The reigning champ pushed hard picking off car after car and ended his 60-mile race day with a one minute and one second lead over Adam Pfankuch. Aaron Hawley and Luke McMillin finished third and fourth respectively.
Sunday's final 60-miles was not without drama. MacCachren, Pfankuch, Hawley and McMillin all started on the front row in Sunday's race and as the final 60-miles started MacCachren got to the front right off the start line. MacCachren and Pfankuch ran away from the field although they ran within seconds of each other throughout the entire race.
MacCachren led physically as well as on corrected time leading into the final lap and with only 6-miles left in the race the radio crackled from the #1600 race car. "I think I broke the front end." MacCachren punished his race car all weekend long and the right front spindle broke apart, but he continued nursing his ROCKSTAR Energy Racing single-seat Alumi Craft race car through the desert.
Pfankuch passed MacCachren along the lakebed coming into the final run down the main pit lane and took the checkered flag first physically, however MacCachren was able to take the checkered flag in the broken race car claiming his first win of the 2010 season.
MacCachren said at the finish line, "Well it wasn't easy today. We had to overcome some obstacles and nurse the broken spindle to the finish line but we ended up making it. Adam and Luke ran real fast today and I'm happy to get an early victory in the season."
Official Results will be posted as soon as we receive them from SNORE.
