Thierry Mas from France Ironmanned his first ever Baja 1000 attempt on a Honda XR650R. Mas crossed the finish line at approx. 8:45PM Friday night. Unfortunately he miscalculated his arrival time in La Paz and under-estimated the Baja 1000 and told his girlfriend he would be here at Noon. But in the end, even if a few hours late, he did what few have done and solo'd the 1000.

An exhausted Mike Penland brought his beat and battered #96a Can-Am Outlander into La Paz just in front of the #28 TT of Alan Pflueger much to his relief and disbelief. Penlands quad was barely recognizable missing the entire rear fender and tweeked subframe. Penland is from Rabun Gap, Ga. and he raced with Scott Kilby, Waynesville, N.C./Jeremy Reach, Union Point, Ga./Hoyt Penland, Rabun Gap, Ga.

We caught up with Mike Penland Saturday morning at the awards ceremony where he filled us in on their race. He rode the first 150 miles or so and handed the quad off to another rider then got in the chase truck and headed for San Ignacio. There they found the quad in shambles and word that their rider Will McCampbell got hit from behind hard by a race truck and was knocked unconcious for 45 minutes. He had been transported by then to the hospital, then ultimately to the hospital in San Diego.

Mike and the crew did what they could with the quad to get it back on the road. The aftermarket resovoir shocks on 2 corners were replaced with stock ones they had with them and they raced south.

12 miles from the finish Mike hit a ditch at speed and damaged his rotator cuff. Another one of many amazing stories from Baja.
