ENSENADA, Mexico—Making up for lost time from a slow start to their racing season, teammates Brian Collins, Las Vegas, and Larry Ragland, Cave Creek, Ariz., stormed through a race-record field of 438 starters to capture a stunning overall 4-Wheel and SCORE Trophy-Truck victory Saturday in the 38th Tecate SCORE Baja 500 desert race. Starting and finishing in Ensenada, Mexico, Collins drove the first 150-miles in the No. 12 Collins Motorsports Chevy Silverado before turning the wheel over to Ragland to drive to the finish, covering the challenging, dust-filled 424.29-mile course in 9 hours, 36 minutes and 49 seconds, averaging 44.13 miles per hour.

Collins and Ragland, captured the 4-wheel vehicle win with a flawless, flat-free race over a boulder-strewn, silt-grabbing desert course in front of a massive crowd estimated at nearly 200,000 spread out along the course by Mexican tourism officials. The record-setting race was filmed for television by Aura360, SCORE’S TV production partner, to air in December as a one-hour special on NBC in the U.S. and ESPN International worldwide.

SCORE Baja 1000 Class 21 Motorcycle Champion, Mikey Childress, flagged down the DirtNewz crew at the Pepsi Stand after climbing off his Honda XR650R. Childress had just completed a full day of wide-open prerunning on his Honda prerunner bike in anticipation of the 38th Annual SCORE Tecate Baja 500.

“We were the first out of the hotel this morning as the sun rose and we’ll be the last ones in. For the past two weeks we have been prerunning and logging big miles. I’m feeling really good on the bike,” commented a smiling Childress.

2006 Tecate SCORE Baja 500

The DirtNewz Crew arrived to the seaside city of Ensenada, Baja California under the cover of darkness mid-evening Tuesday night and immediately found race fiestas in full swing in downtown Ensenada. We caught up with the Jimco Race Team roaming the streets in search of wild fun and that was only the beginning. Leading the charge was “Hammer,” who was in full stride upon our arrival and sporting the latest DirtNewz apparel. He was subsequently rewarded the following day when he found us with the Hooters Desert Race Girlz at Hwy 3 & KM 54. Check out the photo gallery for the photos!!!

However, the prerun stories continue to develop here on the coast of the Pacific Ocean.

Rancho Santa Veronica, Baja California (May 16, 2006)

SCORE CEO/Founder Sal Fish once commented, “Desert racing isn’t for wusses!” The first weekend of prerunning is in the books and the buzz among the off road racing community is all about an 80-mile section described as Baja dense jungle.

Already a handful of whiners are complaining about the difficulty of the course and some have said that the trucks won’t make it though with their body panels still attached. The little used route heads into the Pine Forest north of El Compadre Trail. After passing Compadre Trail, the course goes faint and gets tight for the next 80-miles, which includes downed trees, bushes and very limited visibility.
