Chula Vista, CA (September 12, 2008) - With Round 11 of Championship Off Road Racing only hours away teams are still wrenching on their race vehicles, fixing and fine tuning every inch to make it just right.
Scott Douglas suffered an intense crash during the first practice session which sent him to the hospital. Flying off the table at the Start/Finish he hit the lip of the table top jump which kicked him into the air, slammed the nose of his Amsoil/ Khumo Pro 4 into the ground. The truck picked up speed and went end over end, completely demolishing the truck. Douglas was sent to the hospital and due to a knee injury will not be able to race the remainder of the season. Pro Lite Champion Chad Hord will take over the driving duties for Douglas.
Hord, who will now pull double duty this weekend at 'The Quarry' in Chula Vista, California has raced in other classes before. Hord ran Douglas' back up truck during the second practice strong and will put the Pro 4 thru the paces during tomorrows race.
The way CORR is handling this injury is different than they have done in the past. At Round 9 & 10 of CORR Racing in Pomona, California Johnny Greaves and Bryce Menzies both suffered intense crashes which sent them to the hospital. The two decided to put in a backup driver, Dan VandenHuevel for Greaves and Rob MacCachren for Bryce Menzies, CORR mandated that drivers (Greaves & Menzies) must start the race in their truck and after completeing a full lap were allowed to pull into the pits to change drivers. In this instance CORR is allowing Chad Hord (Douglas' back up driver) to take the green flag in the #7 Amsoil/ Khumo Pro 4 and will only penalize him one lap. Hord will start one lap down at the drop of the green flag.
Drivers and their crews are debating on whether or not this is fair and hoping that next year CORR will mandate a rule for these types of instances. Starting only a lap down will give Hord an advantage that Greaves and others didn't have in the past as they had to do a complete driver change and came out onto the track at least two laps down.
Rodrigo Ampudia, the 24 year old from Ensenada, Mexico, set a record for his team today as he qualified first in both his Pro 2 and Pro Lite. Other than Rob MacCachren, Ampudia is the only driver in CORR history to qualify first in two Pro classes. Rodrigo Ampudia felt strong and comfortable in both his Papas N Beer / Tecate/ Monster trucks. His Father was jumping up and down saying, "This is the best birthday present I could have ever got. I couldn't ask for anything more!!" Although Ampudia may have had the fastest times on the track today he will not have the chance to start in the front row tomorrow as he chose at random an inversion of 8 in the Pro 2 Class and 4 in the Pro Lite Class.
In tomorrow's Pro 2 race, 2007 Pro 2 Champion Jerry Whelchel will start in the front row next to Greg Adler. In the Pro 4 division Tim Herbst gets the lucky draw and will also start in the front for tomorrow's race next to Steve Barlow. The two qualified 7th and 8th, over 4 seconds behind the leaders lap times. We will have to wait until the green flag drops to see if these two can hold onto the lead.
Jeff Huseman, driving the #55 Dirt Logic Pro Lite, will take the pole in the Pro Lite Class starting next to Jeff Kincaid. These two both qualified less than a second behind Ampudia and Naughton who took the two fastest Pro Lite times of the day.
Las Vegas native BJ Baldwin took the track for the first time in his CORR career today and qualified 13th of 23 racers. Baldwin has been itching all season to get in his RPS Built Pro 2. A few races ago Baldwin told DIRTnewz staffers,"I want to wait until the last few races of the season but I don't know if I will be able to hold out." Baldwin's truck has been done for a few months now and he has had the chance to get some seat time but still has a few things to learn as he heads into his first ever CORR race at 'The Quarry' in Chula Vista, California tomorrow.
Be sure to tune into DIRTnewz for continuous coverage from the track at 'The Quarry' in Chula Vista, California. The race action will also be broadcast live on SPEED Channel tomorrow from 12:00- 2:00PST.
STAY TUNED!!
