NEWPORT BEACH, CA (June 13, 2006) –
When the dust settled after Championship Off Road Racing’s
first “Sportsman Only” weekend in Antigo,
Wisconsin, some CORR veterans and familiar faces found
their way back to the podium and at the top of the points
standings.
A good-sized crowd was on hand June 10th and 11th in
Antigo, cheering for the nearly 100 competitors that
filled the five sportsman classes—Sportsman 2,
Sportsman Stock, Super Buggy, Single Buggy, and Light
Buggy.
Last year’s Sportsman 2 runner-up Dan Baudoux
made a statement in his opening weekend, winning both
features in Antigo to finish with 40 points. Ross Hoek
and Mike Savage closed out the podium both days, each
with second and third place finishes, and are tied for
second overall with 30 total points.
Dave Waldvogel, who was crowned CORR’s Sportsman
Stock Champ in 2005, won Saturday’s race and is
back on top of the point standings with 28 points. Close
behind with 26 points in the Sportsman Stock division
are Eric Rupple, Sunday’s winner, and Rod Well,
who placed third on Saturday and fifth on Sunday.
A pair of second place finishes landed John Mason a
spot at the top of the Super Buggy point standings.
Mason’s 32 points tie with Gary Nierop, who won
Saturday’s race, as well as Round 2 of the West
Coast circuit in Chula Vista. Scott Schwalbe won Sunday’s
Antigo race to move into a third place tie with Ryan
Mulder, who earned a third place spot on the podium
on Saturday.
In the Single Buggy division, Michael Seefeldt and Steve
Socha are tied for the points lead. Each racer has one
victory and 29 total points. Last year’s Single
Buggy Champ Mark Steinhardt is back in the points hunt
with 26 points and a fifth place standing overall.
CORR’s Light Buggy Division is led by Steve Oman,
who won Saturday’s event and placed third on Sunday
for 34 total points. Mike Tikkanen grabbed the second
spot with strong showings both days for a total of 23
points on the weekend. Right behind Tikkanen sits Greg
Stingle, who topped the podium on Sunday to jump into
the points race with a total of 21 points.
The next stop of the CORR Lucas Oil Racing Series is
in Crandon, Wisconsin, June 24th and 25th. The Forest
County Potawatomi Brush Run Races will feature eight
classes of racing, including the three pro truck divisions—Pro
4, Pro 2 and Pro Lite. The weekend also features the
13th annual FCP Chairman’s Cup, with a record
purse of $25,000 for the overall winner.
