Barstow, CALIFORNIA • March 25, 2009 — DSMSmotorsports had a rough race weekend, wait till you hear what happened, and how their team pulled together to get them across the finish line! As you may recall from the February race report they nearly lost the passenger side rear hub. In preparing for this race they changed both rear hubs and brake calipers. Friday both Tony & Jenzl #132 wanted to test the car and mark the course on the GPS. They only made it to mile 17 when they felt the car handling very bad. They found the drivers’ side rear hub had exploded and the wheel was hanging on by only 2 studs. They had to be towed back to main pits. Fortunately, there were enough team members, and spare parts of the old hubs to rebuild both so the car could make it to tech. Tony had been working long hours all week, and without the help of Steve, Mark, Ian, and Brian it would have been too much work for him to get it done alone. Pinky #132 passed tech with out any problems. Jenzl #132 started the race in 5th position with Jarrad Midlik as her co-driver. They were racing fast, and things were going great as she made her way to 3rd by the second lap. At mile marker 3 Jenzl and Jarrad realized something was wrong with the brakes. Stopping at mile 4 where Rob and Freddy were they along with Chase 1 Mark and Brandon removed the driver side rear brake caliper and crimped off the brake line with vice grips and duct taped it to the arm. Continuing on with limited brakes they made it back to main pits where the caliper was waiting (Go Brandon and Mark in the Tyrex) and everyone joined in to get Pinky #132 back in the race!
Tony Nguyen and Bubba Jackson started lap 3 of 7 and got a flat tire. Lap 4 they had to stop to pick up a new spare tire, just to have a bunch of cracks that had to be fixed. They also lost the shock, which now means they are driving conservatively. Lap 5 brought another flat, and again a flat during lap 6 that caused the rim to stick to the caliper. Stopping in main pits before the last lap they picked up a new spare and Jarrad found a sheared front suspension bolt (he has some eagle eyes from 50ft. away!).
After Tony got in on lap 3 Jenzl waited for Kevin to bring his #847 truck in so she could jump in the co-drivers seat with his daughter Bobbi Shain behind the wheel for the start of their 4th lap. Bobbi Shain is a 17-year-old young lady that Jenzl met 3 years ago and is now her “desert daughter”; this was Bobbi’s 3rd official race. Completing her “Granny” lap and now in the groove ready to step it up, Bobbi and Jenzl made it 7 ½ miles on their 6th lap where the steering rack bolts sheared off and caused the steering rack to go into the radiator, which ended their day. Thanks to Mark, Brandon, Cory and Nick for getting the rack back on long enough for them to drive the truck to safety and towed them to Hodge where Ian in his trusty Ford came to rescue.
Tony and Bubba finished the day in 7th place out of 10 entries. Tony would like to thank 2 spectators, Mauricio and Al for helping them with the tiring roadside repair that just took forever, along with Marty and Rick’s crew for the tire/shock repair.
Jenzl #132 would like to say thank you to Bobbi Shain, “You trusted me and allowed me to instruct you through the Barstow desert”.
