Tecate SCORE Baja 500

SCORE President/CEO – Sal Fish released the 2006 SCORE Baja 500 map on Monday after rumors of an exciting new section of race course set for this year’s SCORE Baja 500. The new section features little raced upon section covering over 100 miles of Baja beauty.

For days the buzz throughout the off road racing community has been guessing where the course was going and what vehicles would have the advantage in the new section. Well, only time will tell as this season’s SCORE Baja 500 prerunning opens up on Saturday May 13, 2006, which is only a few days away.

DirtNewz has spoken with many different race teams who all have plans to head south in the next week for their first look at the new terrain. In fact, Desert Assassin’s Trophy Truck driver Cameron Steele told us last night the entire DA Krew was southbound this weekend in search of the a first-ever Baja 500 win.

Coordinated efforts between SCORE International and the people of Mexico continue to play an important aspect in promoting off road racing in Mexico. Working diligently with local government officials, as well as state and federal agencies from the Mexican government, can be challenging for Fish, however his decades of positive relationship building has paid off as each race poses its own challenge.

With formidable assistance from the many resources afforded to Sal Fish, an incredible 424.29 mile race course has been developed to challenge the best off road racers in the world.

After leaving the city of Ensenada the race course heads to Ojos Negros where everything changes this year and the race course heads north for a gigantic 75-mile loop through the pine forest and a ways beyond. Those that make it to El Rayo will then forage another 50+ miles before hitting the pavement of Hwy 3 and running south to the Mike’s Sky Ranch turnoff. From there, it’s pretty much business as usual for the seasoned off road racer. The El Coyote loop and then back to Valle Trinidad and across the peninsula to Hwy 1 and out to Erendira for the beach run before heading back into Santo Tomas. Finally, the bumps of Tres Hermanos will test the tired and hardy soles as the leaders charge for the finish line beyond Ojos Negros on the inbound run.

This year’s SCORE Baja 500 is slated for a wild ride and DirtNewz will be bringing you the action live from the backcountry of Baja’s harsh environment.

Stay tuned as our many prerunning reports will fill our SCORE Baja 500 coverage beginning in only one week.
