The southern Nevada desert is known to be a haven for off road racers and their fans alike. The Best In The Desert off road racing association presented the Henderson’s Terrible 400 in early December under the windy and blustery cold desert conditions, but that didn’t stop the nation’s best teams from reaching out for the BITD Championship.
Raging terror in the desert was champion off road racer – Chuck Hovey driving his BFGoodrich/Mastercraft/FOX Racing Shox sponsored Class 1500 to another overall win that not only captured the class win, but clinched the season championships racing the 2005 Best In The Desert Henderson's Terrible "400.”
Besting all other teams in the field and racing in his Jimco single seat Class 1500 car was the dominant Hovey who continued his rule in the Nevada desert. Heading into the final race of the off-road racing season, Hovey led his competition in a run for the season championship point’s title. The 37 year-old veteran desert racer took charge early in the race with fast lap times as he sought out another win this season.
Hovey has consistently finished in the top five throughout most of the Best In The Desert off road racing season except for the disheartening run at TSCO Vegas to Reno race. However, the wiley family-built team came back strong here at Henderson's Terrible 400 where they took not only the win in the tough 1500 class, but captured the overall win clinching the Best In The Desert season championship.
Battling with the likes of Sam Berri, BJ Richardson, Scott Kincaid and Pat Dean for the season championship, Hovey not only outlasted his competition, be he ran faster and stronger than all the others to finish the season out with a commanding performance.
Hovey's overall winning run only took him 6 hours 26 minutes 27 seconds which bested second place overall finisher - Pete Sohren (driving a Trophy Truck) by almost 12 minutes.
