8:00 FOX Racing Shox Update

Ensenada, Baja California (June 2, 2006) The DirtNewz Crew is outta here after a full day of festive fun here at the SCORE Baja 500 contingency. With a record crowd that has stunned the off road nation, tomorrow's race is certain to be of epic proportions. DirtNewz will roll out the to KM 19, Ojos Negros, El Rayo, Goat Trail, Mike's Road, Valle Trinidad, Santo Tomas, Ojos Negros (Inbound) and the finish line at the softball field. Bringing it to you here on the net as the action happens from Baja.

7:30 FOX Racing Shox Update

Ensenada, Baja California (June 2, 2006) It is unofficially being reported that 462 racers have entered the 2006 SCORE Tecate Baja 500 set to rage off the line early in the morning. The swell at contingency has slowed, however their is still a line of teams waiting to snake through in the final hours of tech and contingency.

Ensenada, Baja California (June 2, 2006) Still rolling strong through the crowds and after a full day of Mexican celebrations this Baja 500 contingency has no end in sight. Headlining in their first ever Baja 500 is NITTO Tire who has joined forces with Arciero-Miller Racing for the 2006 SCORE Baja 500 and Baja 1000 races. NITTO has been involved in extensive testing with Arciero-Miller Racing in the past few months and recently celebrated their big sponsor announcement at the Oakley facility in South Orange County.

Of course, Ryan Arciero and Mark Miller are experienced Baja Champions who are always pushing the envelope in search of the next best edge.

RPS Owner/Founder - Barry Beacham took time with DirtNewz and explained that the strategy for the race is to start off at a solid pace and let the race come to them. Beacham is the Arciero-Miller Crew Chief and is slated for duty in the right seat tomorrow morning.

5:47 FOX Racing Shox Update

Ensenada, Baja California (June 2, 2006) Pechanga Resort & Casino sponsored-Mike Voyle rolled the # 62 Trophy Truck into the massive crowds who have all swarmed the yellow and purple truck. Hundreds of fans have surrounded the crew as the Pechanga / Voyles Race Truck is rolling through towards technical inspection.

4:44 FOX Racing Shox Update

Ensenada, Baja California (June 2, 2006) As we previously reported, this year's contingency may have set an all-time crowd record, however we'll have to wait and see what the Ensenada Tourism Board reports after the race.

The contingency line is still very long as the near is not very close. The "musica" is raging and their is no end in sight. Watch for the fiesta here on the Paciifc Coast to continue into the late night hours.

4:00 FOX Racing Shox Update

Scott Gayley, racing with the Wilson Brothers Racing, was strolling around when DirtNewz caught up with him. Scott said, "My son Pat is stuck at home studying and working while I'm here enjoying the best Baja 500 contingency I've ever seen. Wow...this is just way cool! My son is really missing out."

DirtNewz tracked down BJ Baldwin and he was sporting a cast on his left foot that he suffered in his professional Ju Jitsu program only a couple weeks ago. Baldwin has an epic run at the San Felipe 250 in late February finishing second to Garron Cadiente. Baldwin said he's going to take it easy in the early stages before railing fast towards the finish line.

3:45 FOX Racing Shox Update

The sun is up high and the temperatures are absolutely perfect as the music continues to pump it up loudly as the line of race teams is still very long.

We ran into Brent Parkhouse in his 1-2 1600 car and he was rolling towards contingency and Parkhouse was still parked outside the San Nicolas Hotel with 100 cars and trucks in front of him. We didn't count the cars and trucks behind Parkhouse, but we're estimating contingency to run until at least 8:00 p.m. or longer.

2:23 FOX Racing Shox Update

We caught up with John Marking / FOX Racing Shox and had a chance to talk with him about racing the 1988 Baja 500 where he took victory in Class 1-2 1600. This year, Marking is racing with Danny Anderson in his single-seat Class 1. Marking is one of eight SCORE winners that raced in 1988 and won and are here in 2006 searching for yet another victory. Marking recently raced in the CORR Lucas Oil Series and took 5th and 6th finishes, repectively.

Marking said, "Danny is starting and will give me the car at RM 256 and I'll run it to the finish line. I've run that section many times before and prerun it in the past 8 days numerous times. We're looking forward to a great race."

The 1988 SCORE Baja 500 was previously the record for entries until this year where SCORE Officials have unofficially stated that this year's entries are a new record. As of yesterday, over 440 entries had been recieved without additional late entries expected here today.

2:00 FOX Racing Shox Update

Wow...The DirtNewz live broadcast has just ended here at contingency and the crew continues to hammer the dirt and asphalt around contingency in search of the latest info. SMD Motorsports has arrived to contingency with the # 27 TrailReady Trophy Truck after suffering a blown motor in testing two days ago. Team Owner Steve Scaroni and his crew were able to put it all together and pulled an all-nighter putting the final touches on the Leon Patton motor that powers the # 27 Trophy Truck.

The Coca-Cola Girlz have taken over the big stage rising 20' feet in the air and dancing in their red Coke spandex outfits.

It seems like today's big contingency contest is between the Coke Girlz and the Tecate Girlz!

1:21 FOX Racing Shox Update

MasterCraft Racing's Robbie Pierce spent time with DirtNewz explaining this is his first Baja race as the driver of his Pro Truck. Pierce commented, "I raced with Tom Ridings at the Baja 500 two years ago, but this effort here with my own team is very exciting. We're putting the MasterCraft Rolling Thunder #230 through the paces and hoping to get it on the podium on Saturday night. Not only does our company race in the desert for research and development of our race products, but we're hoping to brand MasterCraft even bigger than we have in the past ten decade."

The crowds here at contingency have literally been wild off-the-hook in what DirtNewz is estimated to be the largest crowd at a Baja 500 or Baja 1000 contingency in over a decade. An unprecedented showing has erupted here at this year's race.

Kit Racing's Adam Pfankuch just stopped by and he's amped big time for this race. His 1-2 1600 car is ready to roll as he charges for victory at this, the 2006 SCORE Baja 500 race. Pfankuch is the perverbial dark horse as he can strike with a big win at any time.

Nick with PCI Racing has just cleared the DirtNewz/FOX Racing Shox Truck where we are broadcasting live to you and Nick says that Scotty and the Old # 7 Fabtech / Toyo Tires Trophy Truck are ready to roll. Justin has prepped the truck to the "T" and you can expect a big performance from Scott and Justin taking it from the start to the finish this year. Nick said, "This is destined to be a great run for Scott and the PCI Racing Team. Scott will be soloing this race for the first time in his career.

10:30 FOX Racing Shox Update

The anticipated opening of the 38th Annual SCORE Tecate Baja 500 has just opened here in downtown Ensenada. At 10:00 a.m. SCORE Officials opened the gates to the official contingency area south of the San Nicolas Hotel as 20,000 fans anxiously awaiting the opening of the festivities. Contingency this year is being held in a different location than previous years approximately two blocks west than the normal location. The San Nicolas Hotel is the host hotel as the best-of-the-best off road race teams have all converged for what is expected to be “one hell of a race.”


DirtNewz caught up with Steve Sullivan Motorsports, Kash Vessels, Ann Maso, SCORE Class 10 Champion – John Cooley, Rob MacCachren, Gustavo Vildosola, Gerardo Iribe and one of the most famous Baja racers of all-time, Carlos Iribe. as well as a host of other teams all vying for the top spot in tomorrow’s big race.
