POMONA, Calif.—Once again setting the tone for another competitive weekend of racing, Menzies Motorsports’ Rob MacCachren and Bryan Freeman qualified first in the two classes that qualified on Friday for Saturday’s Round 5 of the 2008 Championship Off-Road Racing Series (CORR) at the Los Angeles County Fairplex in Pomona, Calif..
      Round 5 of 2008 CORR Series will be held Saturday and Round 6 will be held Sunday at the 9,000-seat dirt raceway located adjacent to the famed Fairplex dragstrip that includes a .74-mile purpose-built dirt race course.  Gates open at 9 a.m. and following practice sessions, racing begins at Noon. Qualifying for the remaining classes will be held Saturday morning and qualifying for all classes in Sunday’s Round 6 will be held on Sunday morning.
     Saving his fastest lap for the last of four qualifying laps, team leader Rob MacCachren qualified first with a fast lap of 52.643 seconds, averaging 51.86 miles per hour in the No. 921 BFG Tires Honda-powered AlumiCraft open-wheel desert race car. Winning three of four rounds so far with one second-place, MacCachren leads the CORR Series points in Pro Buggy.
     MacCachren, leading the six-driver, seven-vehicle Menzie’s Motorsports team, will qualifying Saturday morning in Pro-2 in the No. 21 Rockstar Ford F-150. MacCachren has also won three of four races this year in that two-wheel drive truck class as well as leading the season points.
     “Our Buggy is in great shape, no problems at all,” said MacCachren, who has 66 career CORR race wins. “Because pavement is a small but important part of this race course, we decided to switch to a different BFGoodrich Tire for this race and it certainly handled the changing surfaces very well. Our Rockstar Ford F-150 is kind of like Big Brown waiting in the stables to get out on the track and let all that horsepower run free. We haven’t made any significant changes in either of our race cars since we were here in April, and hopefully we’ll still be good enough to run up front, but I now both races will be very, very tough.”
     Freeman, a desert-racing veteran, continues to make his rookie season of short-course racing magical as he qualified first for the fifth consecutive race in Single Buggy with a fast lap of 57.837 seconds at an average speed of 47.31mph in the No. 307 Nevada Off-Road Buggy Fraley-VW. Winning all four races held so far this season, Freeman, who qualified two seconds faster than his nearest rival, also leads the Single Buggy season point standings.
     Menzies Motorsports, based in Las Vegas, also had two other racers qualify on Friday.
     Larry Job had carburetor problems, but managed to qualify ninth in the Pro Buggy division in the No. 907 Mastercraft AlumiCraft-Honda in 55.927 seconds.
     Brock Krahenbuhl, currently third in Single Buggy points, qualified third with a time of 1 minute, 00.001 seconds in the No. 312 KMC Fraley-VW.
     The Menzies Motorsports lineup also includes fellow Southern Nevada desert racers Bryce Menzies, and Bruce Fraley. Both race in the Pro Lite division.
      Menzies, at 20 the youngest driver on the team and son of team owner Steve Menzies, returns after missing Round 4 because of minor injuries sustained in a practice crash. He drives the No. 7 Fox Shox Ford Ranger.
     Fraley, also a noted race car builder, will drive the No. 12 MSD Ford Ranger.
     Menzies Motorsports is based out of a state-of-the-art 31,000-square foot race shop in southwest Las Vegas and the new team also has a test facility with a one-mile track south of Las Vegas which is laid out nearly identically to course at the Las Vegas International Off-Road Raceway. Owned by Las Vegas contractor Steve Menzies, the team is making a major impact despite being only in its second season overall and first year with more than two drivers.
     Kroyer Racing Engines of Las Vegas builds the Ford truck engines and the Honda Pro Buggy motors for Menzies Motorsports while Southern California’s FAT Performance builds the VW Single Buggy engines.
     This weekend’s races will air both on the Speed Channel and NBC TV on a delayed basis.  A two-hour show from Round 7 is scheduled to air at 2 p.m. (PT) on Saturday, June 22 on Speed TV and a one and one-half hour show from Round 8 is set to air at noon (PT) on Sunday, July 6 on NBC.
