Robby Gordon Flies High
Off the Laughlin Leap to Capture his First Win of the
Season
Laughlin, NV - The 2008
SCORE Desert Racing Series was kicked off this evening with
the 14th annual SCORE Laughlin Leap. With $16,000 on the
line racers from all over the country made their way to
Laughlin, Nevada to make a name for themselves at this years
season opener.
Nascar driver Robby Gordon, driving the
#77 Monster Energy/ Toyo Tires Chevrolet, told Dirtnewz
staffers early on in the day that he didn't believe that
his truck would be a contender in the 2008 SCORE Laughlin
Leap. Robby made his way to the start line for the first
time and surprised both himself and his fans by flying the
farthest and capturing the win here in Laughlin. Robby jumped
142' 2", still shy of the record held by Riviera Racing
of 160' 6".
BJ Baldwin who is sporting a new paint
scheme for the 2008 desert racing season is looking for
his third consecutive win here at the Laughlin Desert Challenge,
while Rob MacCachren/ Mark Post are here to defend their
#1 plate after capturing the 2007 SCORE Overall Season Point
Championship. Jerry Whelchel will be splitting the driving
duties with his new teammate Chet Huffman in the #40 Chevy
1500 for the entire 2008 racing series.

Josh Baldwin tells Dirtnewz all about his
brand new Geiser/Pence Trophy Truck
Mastercraft CEO, Robby Pierce, tackles
his first SCORE race in his newly acquired JIMCO Trophy
Truck. Robby and co-driver Joey Westhoff are looking forward
to racing the entire SCORE desert season in the #35 Mastercraft
Chevy. This dynamic duo brought the #230 Pro Truck to a
second place finish at the 2006 SCORE Tecate Baja 500 and
have now made their way to the prestigious Trophy Truck
class.
Although there are 150 entries there are
a number of teams that haven't made it out to this years
Laughlin Desert Challenge. The Herbst brothers don't have
any of their trucks at the season opener, and it seems that
G&R Racing, Andy McMillin, Bob Shephard, Jesse Jones,
Cameron Steele and many more are also sitting this race
out.
Many people are speculating that the low
turnout may be due to the fact that the BITD Parker 425
is next weekend in Parker, AZ but we'll have to wait until
race day to see how many people actually make it to the
start line.
