Heidi Steele’s Heartbreak is Most Others Dream Come True
March 21, 2008 — Starting 2008 with victories at the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge and the Best in the Desert Parker 425 didn't leave teammates Heidi Steele and Tim Lawrence any room to improve. They were the top of their class known as 7sx for modified mid size trucks and came into the recent SCORE San Felipe 250 with the points lead and high hopes.
Heidi was also riding high as a finalist for the prestigious National Human Resource Association (NHRA) Orange County Executive of the Year. Both the 250 and the NHRA award would be decided within 3 days time and Heidi was burning the candle at both ends in typical fashion, which make it possible for her to be victorious in both arenas.
Heidi drives a Built Ford Tough Ranger pickup at the races and is the VP of Human Resources for Accent Care during her regular workweek, she holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration as well as Baja victories. Sponsored by Lucas Oil, Yokohama Tire, ATX Wheels and Alloy USA she has what equates to a full time race career and a full time job. No she doesn’t juggle tennis balls while on fire but no doubt she could do it.
At 5'8" and 107lbs one may not expect the blonde executive to be a competitive driver but her track record more that proves her determination. In 2005 Heidi was class champion and winner of the Baja 500 and Baja 1000, in 2008 she has continued her winning ways and after a 4th place finish in San Felipe she and Lawrence lead the championship point’s race with 3 events remaining in the SCORE International series.
"We were racing for the win and were within 40 seconds of the lead when we had a ball joint break," said Tim. "We were able to fix the truck and narrowly missed 3rd place but the important part is that we finished and we are the only truck in our class who has done that at every race this year," continued Tim whose TLR racing shop preps and builds their Ford Ranger truck.
"It's tough leading the points in the two top organizations," said Heidi "We are battling in some cases two sets of trucks, both of which are mostly racing one series or the other."
Following last weeks San Felipe race the NHRA recognized Heidi as the "outstanding organizer" of 2008 at the recent Executive of the Year gala in front of a group of her peers and media alike. It wasn’t the top award, but just like in San Felipe, you can't win if you don't finish....or in this case aren't nominated.
Heidi, Tim and crew will next aim their racing efforts on the Terrible Town 250 April 12th in the Southern Nevada desert. Entering this race they will be leading both points series and have finished every mile of all the races in 2008. Expectations are high but what else could you expect of the only women driver of record in a 4 wheel vehicle out of 280 plus entries at the San Felipe event, they go to win and they never lose track of their goal.
