McMillin Racing Update: Baja 1000
San Diego, CA (December 2, 2010) Fielding three race cars at the 2010 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 was quite an endeavor for Mark McMillin and his McMillin Homes race team. By the time the last of his three race vehicles had reached the finished line of the 1061-mile race, he and his sons, Daniel and Luke, celebrated a season championship and two top ten finishes.
Driving the first half of the race in his #23 McMillin Homes/BFGoodrich Tires race truck, Mark McMillin had a near flawless run to the halfway point at San Ignacio. Arriving to the McMillin Racing pit at San Ignacio, Mark McMillin was in 7th position among the leaders. Crew Chief Cameron Parrish rode in the right seat with Mark and stayed in with driver, Chuck Hovey, until the La Purisma pit. Chuck ran a solid pace and survived 20 minutes in the devilish Baja silt, where four trucks were able to get past him. After a whopping 1000 plus miles of racing, the #23 McMillin Homes truck crossed the checkered flag in 10th position among the elite SCORE Trophy Trucks.

BAJA BUST
The agony of not finishing the Baja 1000 is becoming all too familiar. The Torchmate desert team returned to Baja after defeat last year in the early stages of the race. A large rock broke the transmission pan costing us valuable hours before the truck lost power and spent most of the night stuck in a sand wash. Eventually, we were forced to throw in the towel – an act we were determined not to repeat this year.
The 43rd Baja 1000 was truly an epic race. Due to logistics and costs, it is not every year that a peninsula run takes place and the scale of such a race is hard to explain without firsthand experience - 1062 miles of remote and brutal off-road terrain in roughly a straight line from Ensenada to La Paz. Our plan called for four drivers to relay the #601 truck to the finish line within the time limit of 45 hours. I was invited to navigate during the second leg (race mile 242 to 542) with driver Mark Levrett.

Team General Tire was primed to unleash its fury on the desert’s most fearsome course for its third consecutive season. Finishing at the top, was the unstoppable team of Kent Kroeker, who placed second in Class 8 and “Ballistic” BJ Baldwin who took home fourth place in Trophy Truck.
Traxxas Trophy Truck #86 of Jenkins/Baldwin Crashes Night Before Race

The night before this year's Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 team Traxxas took the #86 Baldwin Motorsports Trophy Truck out onto the race course for a quick light test. Unfortunately the team crashed and wasn't able to make it to the starting line. Mike Jenkins, driver of record with Josh Baldwin taking the second half, were set to head down the peninsula for the 1061 trek to La Paz. Mike Jenkins was excited for his first ever desert race here at the 2010 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 but unfortunately he didn't make it. We hope to see him back in the desert soon.
