Rock Crawler/Rock Racer Shannon Crowned National W.E. Rock
Champion!
CORONA,
Calif., (Sept. 18, 2007) – Monster Energy rock crawling/rock
racing competitor Shannon Campbell finished the 2007 W.E.
Rock competition rock crawling season on a high note this
past weekend, winning the Unlimited class in the combined
East/West Grand National Championships at Spring Creek Off
Road Park near Houston.
Some 22 teams from all over the hemisphere converged on
Texas for this final W.E. Rock event of the season. Campbell
started the competition without his brother/spotter, Nick,
who was out with an injury. In Nick’s place was friend
and fellow competitor Lance Clifford – who helped
Campbell take a 20-point lead into the main event.
“We definitely nailed it this weekend,” said
Campbell.
But the main event wasn’t without some tense moments
for Campbell, Clifford and the fan-favorite Monster Energy
VW-powered Moon Buggy as Campbell had to chase a bonus obstacle
– with precious time running out – to secure
the National championship.
“We had a 20-point lead and were sitting good when
I hit a cone with time running out in the main event,”
explained Campbell. “We got through the exit gates
and I was flagged with a penalty, so I had to complete at
least one bonus obstacle in order to win. There was only
57 second left (out of 10 minutes) and I had to be real
careful and not make any mistakes.”
Campbell then had to not only complete the bonus obstacle,
he had to back down through the cones – with the help
of spotter Clifford – in order to make the exit gate.
“We ended up winning by three points with three seconds
to spare,” said Campbell. “We finally won a
National championship.”
